New Big Ten Logo

January 14, 2011 11:29 am
Edited on: January 14, 2011 11:29 am

The new Big Ten logo was developed by Michael Bierut and Michael Gericke of the international design firm Pentagram.

"The new Big Ten logo was developed to symbolize the conference's future, as well as its rich heritage, strong tradition of competition, academic leadership, and passionate alumni," said Gericke. "Its contemporary collegiate lettering includes an embedded numeral "10" in the word "BIG," which allows fans to see "BIG" and "10" in a single word. Memorable and distinctive, the new logo evolved from the previous logo's use of negative space and is built on the conference's iconic name, without reference to the number of member institutions."

The new logo also provides the flexibility of multiple versions which can be used horizontally, vertically and within new media.

"The new Big Ten logo provides a contemporary identifying mark unifying 12 outstanding institutions," said Delany. "It conveys some elements from the past while simultaneously introducing new features. We think the new logo is fun and has something for everyone."

Big Ten Week 1 Awards

September 7, 2010 6:43 pm

The Big Ten did fairly well in week 1 play going 10-2 including Nebraska. I'd say that's a pretty good start as a conference. So I have come up with 6 awards to give away each week to certain teams that impress or in some cases not so much.

The Biggest Surprise Award goes to Michigan for overcoming UConn 30-10.  The Biggest Surprise Award will be awarded to the team that not necessarily comes up with the best upset, but for the team that out does expectations. For instance Michigan State and Wisconsin are about on the same playing field but if MSU wins by more than two scores it would qualify in this category.

The Most Dominate Award goes to Ohio State for beating Marshall 45-7.  The Most Dominate Award will be awarded to the team that has the most dominate defensive performance judging mostly by points allowed. Any tiebreakers will be given to the team that also scores the most points. For instance Iowa also only allowed 7 points but OSU scored more points.

The Margin of Victory Award goes to Nebraska for beating Western Kentucky 49-10.  The Margin of Victory Award will simply be awarded to the team that has the largest margin of victory. Any ties will go to the team that played the most difficult opponent.

The Scoreboard Buster Award goes to Indiana for racking up 51 points against Towson.  The Scoreboard Buster Award will simply be awarded to the team that scores the most points. Any ties will go to the team that puts up the most offensive stats.

The Upset Award goes to no one since there were no real upsets this week.  The Upset Award will be awarded to the team that has the most unexpected, amazing upset.

The Low-Man on the Totem Pole Award goes to Purdue for getting beat 23-12 against Notre Dame.  The Low-Man on the Totem Pole Award will go to the team that scores the least amount of points in a loss. Any ties will go to the team that has the worst offensive stats.
